Mr. Kharshiing is a member of Rajya Sabha from Meghalaya. He belongs
to the Nationalist Congress Party.
He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 2002.
Since then, he is serving as Member, Committee on Commerce, and
Member, Consultative Committee for the Ministry of External Affairs.
He is also the Chief Whip of the NCP. Mr. Kharshiing has previously
been a Member, Parliamentary Consultative Committee on Defence;
Secretary, Parliamentary Network on the World Bank; and Member,
Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes
and Scheduled Tribes.
Mr. Kharshiing's association with politics goes
back to the days when he was a member of the Meghalaya Legislative
Assembly (1990-1993). He has also served as the Deputy Chairman,
State Planning Board, Meghalaya; Chairman of the Estimates Committee
in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly; and Member, Moral Re-Armament
(MRA), Meghalaya since 1986.
A political and social worker by profession, Mr.
Kharshiing was educated in Shillong, Meghalaya, where he completed
his B.Com from St. Anthony's College and his M.A. in Anthropology
from NEH University. His father, late Dr. Martin Narayan Majaw was
the Minister of Finance/Law/ Revenue/Parliamentary Affairs in the
Government of Meghalaya.
Mr. Kharshiing's interests are varied. A life
member of YMCA, he has a passion for mountain trekking, movies and
traveling on one hand, while on the other, he loves silence and
meditation. He has extensively traveled abroad.
