Interactive Meeting with Visiting Members of the European Parliamentary Committee on Climate Change, February 5, 2008

An Interactive Meeting was organised by the India-EU Forum of Parliamentarians (IEUFP) and the Environment division of FICCI between the visiting delegates of the European Parliamentary Committee on Climate Change and the Indian Members of Parliament.

Senior Indian Members of Parliament who attended the meeting included Mr. Sharad Joshi (Swatantra Bharat Paksh), Dr. EMS Natchiappan (Indian National Congress), Mr. K. Samba Siva Rao (Indian National Congress), and Mr. J.D. Seelam (Indian National Congress).

The European Parliament was represented by Mr Guido Sacconi (Chairman of the Committee, and leader of the delegation); Mr Jerzy Buzek; Ms Cristina Gutiérrez Cortines; Ms Anneli Jäätteenmäki; Ms Romana Jordan Cizelj; Mr Péter Olajos; Ms Maria Sornosa Martínez; Mr Andres Tarand; and Ms Neena Gill (Chairwoman of the Delegation for relations with India).

Dr. Prodipto Ghosh, Former Secretary, Ministry of Environment and Forests, GOI, and Chairman, FICCI's Climate Change Task Force (CCTF), and Member, Prime Minister's National Council on Climate Change made a power point presentation on the theme of climate change and global warming.

Mr. Ramesh Chandran, Executive Director, India-EU Forum of Parliamentarians (IEUFP) & Advisor, and Ms. Rita Roy Chowdhury, Deputy Director represented FICCI.

The meeting provided fruitful insights into themes relating to climate change mitigation, its impact on developed as well as developing economies, the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and the initiatives being taken by various countries to tackle the challenges posed by it.
